General
Our portable log mill lathe debarks logs with up to a 20" diameter butt and up to 24 feet long. We can custom build mills that will handle larger diameter logs and logs over 24 foot if desired.
The mill can turn logs from a 6" to 20" diameter and also mills a Swedish cope or insulation groove for a tight fit. The cope is adjustable according to log size. Efficient log milling rate is between 6 and 8 foot per minute or around 250 to 300 feet of logs per hour. You can mill green logs, seasoned logs and even frozen logs efficiently.
Hydraulics
The mill has hydraulic log lifts at both ends for setting the log for chucking. It also has a hydraulic log chuck, hydraulics turns the log and the carriage speed is controlled with hydraulics. The hydraulics are a closed system and cannot be contaminated with normal use, making the mill very reliable. In fact, we have a mill that has run for 20 years without a hydraulic failure with normal maintenance.
Power
The mill is ran by a 3 hp single phase electric motor to turn the hydraulic motor which operates every thing except the cutting head, which is powered by a 10 hp single phase electric motor. The mill is portable and can be ran with a 12KW generator for out in the woods milling, or connect to a 30 amp breaker at your shop or home.
Maintenance
The mills are very low maintenance. The pillow blocks need a squirt of grease after a full days running and the other moving parts need to be greased only once a week.
The six cutting blades need to be checked periodically for burrs, and then a peanut grinder may be used to knock down any burrs that may be present. The blades will last for years if maintained.
We have milled thousands of feet of logs and only had to change the belt that runs the cutter head due to normal wear.
